Melbourne Cup Fashion & Fun!

An invitation from Amy Zempilas to celebrate the Melbourne Cup at The Crown, came as a lovely surprise. It also meant an outfit decision? Mmmmn, I’d done peplum and colour pop-style at the opening of Ascot a few weeks ago, so it was time for Spring florals for Cup Day.

The dress I had in mind was pretty, but a bit too leggy! Solution? An old-fashioned petticoat! These are very hard to find, so a quick trip to Spotlight for one metre of lilac lace was the answer. A basic, scalloped petticoat, was sewn in a flash. Whilst at Spotlight, I also purchased a bunch of Hydrangeas to create my own headwear.

The petticoat added extra ‘length’ to the outfit and also created an interesting feature. Tip: make a simple coloured petti to go under any short skirt or dress!

As it was a cool, cloudy day in Perth, I wore a white, NF by Nicola Finetti blazer, over my Bec & Bridge dress. A yellow Sportscraft pouch completed the look. Below, you’ll see the ‘Siren’ peep toe shoes clashed… just to add edge!

Amy looked divine in her Country Road shift, bespoke fascinator and nude shoes. Together we looked like a Spring garden!!! My headpiece was made by weaving ribbon through the stems of the hydrangeas and knotting them together. I then pinned the bunch onto my bun. Easy!

Although it was only 10am, once inside the Crown, it magically felt like midnight. The room had been elegantly transformed and was oozing with old world charm from the 1920’s.  A sea of excited, well dressed ‘Cuppers’ filled the room!

Amy and I were guests of Helen Bossi (Bottom L). The fab ladies on our table were delightful and so much funnnn! We shared champers and stories and were all up on the dance floor in no time.

Throughout the day the entertainment was classy. Anthony Callea sang ‘The Prayer’, a personal high-light for me! A novel, ‘Gatsby’ inspired fashion parade was mixed with flapper dancers. Models sauntered down the runway in clothes from Flannel, Aelkemi and Costarella and mixed it up with dancers to create a real ‘Showtime’ performance.

Before long, there were hundreds of people on the dance floor and stage, grooving the afternoon away! It felt surreal… like a nightclub at midnight, but it was Tuesday at noon!

As we left the sun was shining. It was the BEST Melbourne Cup day/night, I’ve ever had! Huge thanks to Amy, Helen, the lovely MLC mums on our table. And of course, thanks to the Crown for hosting such a wonderful event… I’m still smiling just thinking about our fab Cup day… Hope your Cup day was a delight too!
